Patent Bots Releases Second Annual Patent Speed Rankings

Patent Bots analysis of issued patents ranks law firms based on time from first office action to issuance.

Somerville, Mass: Patent Bots, creator of AI-enabled software for patent attorneys, last year added a speed-focused companion to its long-running Patent Quality Rankings. Today, the company unveiled its second edition of the Patent Bots Speed Rankings.

To determine the Patent Speed Rankings, Patent Bots processed every patent issued by the USPTO over the course of a year to assess the number of days from the first office action to issuance. It then ranked the 709 patent law firms with 50+ issued patents based on how long they take to get a patent issued. The rankings are based on the Patent Bots Speed Score, which takes into account prosecution pendencies across different USPTO tech centers.

“Patent attorneys know there’s often a tradeoff between speed and scope, getting a patent issued quickly versus taking the time to secure broader claims,” said Patent Bots founder and CEO Jeff O’Neill. “But for some companies, speed is the priority. A fast-issued patent can stop competitors from copying an innovation, help secure funding from investors, or give a company solid footing in active litigation. Now in its second year, the Speed Rankings give companies real data to inform that conversation with their counsel.”

The following firms ranked highest in the Patent Bots Speed Rankings based upon the Speed Score:

“Law firm fees are often the biggest cost in building a patent portfolio,” said O’Neill. “It’s worth a company’s time to use available data, like our Speed Rankings, to understand how a firm’s practices align with their goals, whether that’s speed, quality and scope or the right balance of all.”

In addition to the Patent Bots Speed Score, Patent Bots ranked firms on other metrics related to obtaining patents quickly, including the number of extensions per patent, the number of office actions per patent, and the number of requests for continued examination per patent. This information is available within the Patent Bots PatentVerse tool; the top ten in each category are publicly available, while further rankings require a Patent Bots subscription.
