Patent Bots Introduces Sprocket, an AI Drafting Assistant for Patent Prep and Prosecution

Sprocket adds new AI capabilities to Patent Bots’ time-tested drafting tools, while keeping attorney judgment at the center.

Somerville, Mass: Patent Bots, the patent legal tech platform trusted by 45 of the top 100 patent law firms, today introduced Sprocket, an AI drafting assistant for patent preparation and prosecution.

Working alongside attorneys in Microsoft Word, Sprocket builds on their prior inputs and guides them step by step through drafting patent applications and office action responses.

Since 2018, Patent Bots has built tools around the day-to-day workflows of patent professionals. The company added generative AI only when the technology was ready for the nuanced demands of real patent work.

“As a former patent attorney, I know how much professional judgment and expertise goes into application drafting,” said Jeff O’Neill, founder and CEO of Patent Bots. “AI tools that confidently get things wrong create more work, not less. We built Sprocket to assist without taking the patent attorney out of the process.”

Rather than relying on autonomous end-to-end generation, Sprocket works step by step through the process, allowing attorneys to review and refine the work as it develops.

Sprocket works inside Word, with the current application or office action response included as context. Attorneys can also attach invention disclosures, transcripts, figures, prior art, and other supporting materials. For office action responses, Patent Bots can automatically retrieve the office action, specification, and cited patent prior art, even for non-public applications.

Patent Bots uses the right technology for each drafting task:

  • Gen AI Chat with Sprocket. Flexible, conversational drafting grounded in the context of the matter.
  • Saved Prompts. Reusable prompts for drafting tasks attorneys perform repeatedly, including firm-wide and individual prompts.
  • Rules-Based Automation. Predictable automation for sections where consistent, repeatable output matters more than generative AI.

“Our approach is to use generative AI where it’s useful and predictable automation where that works better,” O’Neill added. “With Sprocket, the attorney reviews and corrects the work as it develops, and those decisions help guide the next step.”

Patent Bots uses zero data retention for its generative AI tools. Inputs and outputs are never stored or used for training, and patent data is processed on servers in the United States.
