Edge Launches Certus, the World’s First AI Agent for Trademark Law

New product automates clearance searching and application filing end-to-end, targeting an over $23 billion-filing-per-year market overlooked by legal tech

SAN FRANCISCO, CA:  Edge, the maker of a leading AI patent platform, today announced the launch of Certus, the world’s first AI agent for trademark law. Certus automates certain pre-grant trademark work end-to-end—starting with clearance searching and application filing—completing in minutes tasks that traditionally take hours.

Trademark law represents one of the largest and most underserved segments of intellectual property. According to the World Intellectual Property Organization, 11.6 million trademark applications are filed annually, with 88.2 million active trademarks worldwide—many times the volume of patents. Despite this scale, the trademark workflow has seen little technological innovation. Attorneys continue to rely on tedious manual processes, expensive external service providers, and costly specialized search engines. In many cases, the cost of these services exceeds the value of the legal work itself, making trademark practice low-margin or sometimes even loss-making for firms.

“Every company has a brand. Despite that, trademark attorneys have been underserved by legal tech for too long,” said Evan Zimmerman, CEO of Edge. “That’s why we built Certus. We’re giving them an AI agent that’s more than a chatbot—it helps every step of the way.”

Certus is designed to change that. Unlike traditional trademark tools, which function as specialized search engines, Certus operates as an AI agent that completes tasks from start to finish for attorney review. For clearance searching, Certus creates and executes a search strategy, ranks results by relevance using AI, gathers extrinsic evidence to enrich the analysis, and drafts a report based on the attorney’s own template. For application filing, Certus assembles a goods and services identification from pre-approved term lists and can identify suitable dates of first use and specimens.

“I’ve been using Certus in my trademark practice and bringing value to clients today,” said Daniel Rosenberg, a partner at Taft Stettinius & Hollister LLP, an Am Law 100 firm. “I no longer use any other trademark products for clearance because Certus is so much faster and efficient. I can turn matters around in under an hour instead of three days, sometimes a matter of minutes, with better accuracy than competing products.”

While AI-powered legal products have emerged for patent work and general-purpose legal tasks, Certus is the first to bring agentic AI to trademarks. The product represents a step-change from both traditional search tools and earlier AI legal chatbots, which required attorneys to manage each step of the process manually.

Edge is already one of the leading software providers in intellectual property. Its patent product, which is newly renamed as Ingenia, is used globally by enterprises and law firms including Nestlé, McCarter & English LLP, and K&L Gates LLP. The company is backed by Y Combinator.
