In the latest episode of IPWatchdog Unleashed, I had the opportunity to sit down with Ted Wood—a unique figure whose career spans military service, engineering and patent law. After spending time both in-house and at Am Law 100 firms, today Ted is Managing Partner of Wood IP. Our conversation, which took place August 8, was not only interesting and fun but a testament to the diverse pathways one can take to success, both in life and, specifically, in the engineering and patent law fields.

This episode of IPWatchdog Unleashed is more than just a story of career progression; it’s an illustration of how diverse experiences can converge to forge a standout professional path. Ted’s story encourages us to explore our strengths and embrace the unique road that opens before us, putting one foot in front of the other and being unafraid to seize opportunity when it presents.

The Military Journey

The episode kicked off with Ted sharing his fascinating journey. As a young man, Ted admitted to not taking school very seriously until his father challenged him to do better, at which point he discovered a real aptitude for mathematics. From there, Ted’s academic career took off, and he found himself ultimately in ROTC, and with a career as an electrical engineer in the United States Air Force. Ultimately, Ted would spend 24 years in the military—14 on active duty and 10 years in the reserves—and retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. While in the military, Ted worked on advanced weapons systems and signal processing, a particular area of interest and expertise he developed over the years. Again and again, our conversation reflected on how the discipline and perseverance from his years of service shaped his professional endeavors and continues to define him and his career.

Transition to Business and Law

Military Discipline Meets Patent Proficiency: A Conversation with Ted WoodThe transition from the military to law was serendipitous. Initially exploring business avenues and deciding government contracting was not where he wanted to land, Ted was inspired to attend law school after using his wife flirted with the idea herself before pursuing a graduate degree in Education. His military discipline served as an advantage, enabling him to excel in law generally, and patent law specifically. One of his early career successes included a prestigious internship at NCR, an experience that underscored the importance of preparation and leadership, and which led him from the hardcore electronics and electrical engineering and into software.

The Role of AI in Patent Law

Ted offered insights into the impact of AI and software innovations on the industry. He discussed the transformative role AI holds and the necessity for professionals to leverage these tools for enhanced productivity and quality. This perspective highlights how adaptability can make legal professionals indispensable even amidst technological advances.

When asked what cool or exciting innovations his clients are working on, Ted said he has been particularly excited about technological advancements in the field of autonomous vehicles, an area where some of his clients are innovating. He explained that the integration of AI into everyday tech, like self-driving cars and regenerative braking systems, predicts a bright future, igniting new frontiers for invention and innovation.

Conclusion

In closing, Ted reinforced the importance of continuous learning and adaptation—a message resonant with anyone navigating the complexities of modern careers. As someone who thrives on adrenaline and challenge, Ted’s example is a reminder that success often lies beyond our comfort zone.
