Alex Long is the Chief Intellectual Property Counsel & General Counsel of Engineering at the General Electric Company, operating as GE Aerospace. In his role, Alex leads the development and execution of the global intellectual property (IP) strategies for this $32 billion business, and provides executive legal counsel to its expansive R&D engineering organization in navigating a broad range of technology development and protection challenges. Alex heads an international team of over 50 IP professionals including lawyers, paraprofessionals, IP operations and technology specialists located across multiple global GE Aerospace sites (US, IT, IN, UK) and remote throughout the United States.
Prior to his role, Alex spent over fourteen years in private law practice as an IP litigator, where he concentrated on enforcing and defending patent infringement and trade secret claims for clients across diverse industries and technologies, ranging from molecular diagnostics and life sciences to aerospace, telecommunications, semiconductors, computer hardware, and software. He joined GE in 2015 from Latham & Watkins LLP in San Diego, where he was an equity partner and former local litigation department chair.
Prior to joining law practice, Alex was a Management Consultant, first with Andersen Consulting (now Accenture) and then with Sapient Corporation, where he focused on business process reengineering, information systems architecture analysis and design, and integration and testing of customized business solutions for various clients, mostly in the financial services industry.
Alex received his JD cum laude from Northwestern University, and he holds both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
