Cantor Colburn is proud to announce the addition of Partners Vincent Cichosz, John Gutkoski, and Marc N. Henschke and Counsel Joseph Barrera, Ph.D. and Aaron Bumgarner.

About the Attorneys 

Mr. Barrera was formerly in-house at Universal Display Corporation and Bausch + Lomb. He concentrates his practice on the procurement and enforcement of global patent portfolios in very competitive consumer healthcare, pharmaceutical, and medical device markets. Mr. Barrera advises key opinion leaders and research scientists as part of product development teams to strategically define and protect innovation. He is a strong advocate of patent appeals and inventor declarations – a strategy that is aligned with product and regulatory timelines as well as post-grant challenges. Mr. Barrera has a bachelor’s in Chemistry from Potsdam College, a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Dartmouth College, and a JD from the University of New Mexico School of Law. He also held post-doctoral positions at the University of Virginia and Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Mr. Bumgarner’s practice includes all aspects of domestic and international patent preparation, prosecution, and counseling for inventors in the chemical engineering and mechanical engineering industries.  A portion of his practice is devoted to technologies in the chemical, mechanical, electromechanical, medical and software arts, including mechanical devices, chemical processes, medical devices, automation and control systems, nanotechnology and nanotube devices, pressure/temperature measuring devices, fluid flow devices/systems, fuel cells, fiber optic applications and other types of technologies. Before he began his law career, Mr. Bumgarner was a chemical engineer at Cytec Industries. He has a Bachelor of Paper Science and Engineering from Miami (Ohio) University and a JD from University of Connecticut School of Law.

Mr. Cichosz’s intellectual property practice includes 16 years as a founding member of a boutique IP law firm subsequent to 12 years of in-house leadership roles.  His practice includes all aspects of patent procurement, opinion work, and transactional activities.  Mr. Cichosz is experienced in system, component and control technologies in most automotive areas including powertrain, chassis & vehicle stability, energy generation & storage, power & signal distribution, thermal management, displays & infotainment, autonomous vehicles, and V2X communication. In both private and corporate practice, he has guided the professional development of numerous entrants into the patent practice through personal training and mentoring. He has a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering, cum laude, from the University of Detroit Mercy and a JD, cum laude, from Michigan State University College of Law.

Mr. Gutkoski is a veteran first-chair trial attorney representing clients in life sciences and high technology matters. His patent and intellectual property cases have involved various technologies, from pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and collagen production to banking and finance, semiconductors, and telecommunications. He has successfully tried numerous cases to judges and juries across the country, including representing clients in Delaware, Texas, Illinois, Wisconsin, North Carolina, New Jersey, California, Massachusetts, New York and before the International Trade Commission. Mr. Gutkoski has been repeatedly named one of the World’s Leading Patent Practitioners for Patent Litigation by IAM Patent 1000, which recently noted that “He is one of the sharpest and most adaptable patent litigators out there .…” Mr. Gutkoski previously served as the chairman of the Intellectual Property practice in Boston for an international AM Law 100 firm.

Mr. Henschke is an accomplished patent trial attorney trained at AM Law 100 firms with significant first-chair experience in jury trials and Markman claim construction hearings.  He has litigated patent infringement cases involving a wide variety of high technology and medical device matters, including wireless modules and IoT platforms, network switches and routers, computer hardware and software, medical lasers, high-speed data cables, LCD displays, surgical screws, LANs and VLANs, e-commerce applications and business methods, and a multitude of consumer electronics products.  He is often been called upon in his practice to successfully coordinate the interplay between patent litigations and parallel Inter Partes Review (“IPR”) proceedings before the PTAB.  At a previous AM Law 100 firm, Mr. Henschke was an earlier adopter with firmwide oversight responsibilities for evaluating, structuring, and implementing all manner of alternative fee arrangements for commercial and IP litigation cases.  After graduating summa cum laude with a BA from Yale University, and cum laude with a JD from Harvard Law School, he first began his legal career as a commercial litigator who gained extensive experience in matters involving antitrust, soft IP, and business contract disputes.
