Joel Meyer, IP Attorney and Innovation Strategist, Founder and Managing Attorney at Alacritas LLC, is an accomplished Intellectual Property (IP) and software executive with over 30 years of experience in IP and innovation strategy. Joel is recognized by IAM as one of the world’s top 300 strategists (2015-2024) and has a successful track record in building and monetizing IP portfolios. Most recently, Joel served as the Vice President of IP and Innovation Strategy at Digimarc Corporation, leading Digimarc’s Intellectual Property, relationships with standards organizations, and the company’s innovation strategy.
Under his leadership, Digimarc’s IP portfolio consistently ranked among leaders in the computer software category of IEEE Spectrum’s Patent Power scorecard. Built on the foundation of this high-quality portfolio, Mr. Meyer and his team generated revenues through the license and sale of patents in diverse market applications, including content recognition, copy protection, anti-counterfeiting, digital cinema, mobile media discovery, broadcast and internet monitoring, and audience measurement.
In support of these efforts, Joel guided Digimarc through enforcement actions and defenses to validity challenges in the USPTO. Digimarc prevailed in all these actions. More recently, he has helped the company evolve into a cloud services provider for product digitization, adapting the IP strategy to this platform as a service model.
Prior to joining Digimarc, Joel was a partner at the law firm of Klarquist Sparkman, where his practice focused on advising high-tech companies on the protection and enforcement of their intellectual property rights. Joel received a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin with highest distinction, and a JD with honors from the University of Wisconsin Law School.
To anyone mildly involved in developing intellectual property assets, the title of this article seems patently obvious. Yet, in today’s world of data driven Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), it is all too easy to chase patent filing and issuance counts rather than focus on enduring IP value. Patent metrics alone don’t build value. This guide shows how to build litigation-ready assets.
