James Hallenbeck

James D. Hallenbeck is President and CEO of Black Hills IP, LLC. Jim is a licensed attorney in Iowa and Minnesota and a registered patent attorney. In over 20 years of patent practice, Jim focused on patent portfolio construction and prosecution in various technology areas including complex computer software systems and IP operations. Jim received a B.S. in Computer Information Systems from Chapman University in Orange, California (B.S., cum laude, 1998) and a Juris Doctorate from William Mitchell College of Law (J.D., 2004). Prior to the law, Jim worked as a software engineer and analyst, designing and developing global software systems supporting a wide range of industries including financial services, automotive, and insurance. Additionally, Jim spent over five years as a United States Marine. Jim is a frequent speaker on a variety of topics involving IP practice, evolving legal issues, IP operations, modern economics of IP firm management, and improving quality, efficiency, and speed of IP practice with technology.
