This week in Washington IP news, Congress is out of town thanks to a state work period, but there are still several interesting events related to the IP world. The Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF) is hosting an event on the downfall of Japan’s pharmaceutical industry. Elsewhere, New America will hear from several former White House officials on implementing federal legislation that sought to increase equity.

On Tuesday, the ITIF is hosting a panel discussion on Japan’s decline in the pharmaceutical sector. Japan produced about 30% of all new drugs in the ‘80s, but this share has dropped by more than 70%. In addition to a lack of funding in research and innovation, the panel will discuss the country’s policy decisions and what lessons can be learned for other countries including the United States.

The USPTO will provide additional information to prospective IP holders, so they can incorporate IP into their business strategy.
