Tom Foster is a partner with Taylor Wessing. He advises clients on their international strategy for business critical patent and trade secret matters.

Tom has a mathematics background and has technical expertise in 3G, 4G, 5G, broadband, HEVC, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and other technologies, and has represented clients in many of the leading cases involving SEP and FRAND matters. Tom also advises clients in the healthcare industry, including at the intersect of healthcare and digital technologies. Tom advises on trade secret strategies and litigated the first case in the UK courts under the Trade Secrets Directive.

Tom is recognised by long-standing clients as “an excellent attorney and litigator and a very valuable member of our team” and as “demonstrating an excellent command of detail and also the ability to digest and present that complicated technical detail in an easy to understand manner for the court or senior management”.

Tom is co-author of the chapter on UK patent law in Patent Enforcement in the UK and Trans-Pacific Countries. He is a member of a number of initiatives in the legal community, including Oxfam’s Lawyers Against Poverty project, IP Inclusive and Taylor Wessing’s Wellbeing network.

EU SEP Regulation Update: Reenvisaging the European ‘FRANDscape’

On  April 27, 2023, the European Commission published its proposal for how the licensing of standard essential patents (SEPs) should be governed in the EU.
