Sharon has held various roles in Pfizer’s Intellectual Property (IP) Department since 2004, and she is currently Assistant General Counsel, Head of Global IP Policy & Advocacy in Pfizer’s Legal Division. In this role, and through her active involvement and leadership position in several industry trade associations, she works on IP policies that advance the protection of Pfizer’s substantial investment in R&D and the company’s pursuit of breakthroughs that change patients’ lives. Sharon co-led Pfizer’s Legal Division Summer Growth Experience Program and she currently co-leads the 1L Scholar Program.

Sharon holds a B.S. from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and a J.D. from Brooklyn Law School. She is admitted to practice law in New York.

Setting the Record Straight: The Truth about Patents in the Biopharmaceutical Sector

The only thing that moves quicker, disseminates further, and is repeated more often than the truth is misinformation. The more misinformation is repeated, the more challenging it becomes to distinguish truth from falsehood. A groundbreaking 1977 study termed this the “illusory truth effect”. According to the study, if “people are told something often enough, they’ll believe it.”  Simply repeating a statement makes it more likely to appear to be truthful. The impact of the illusory truth effect can be particularly harmful when those responsible for setting policy are unable to differentiate fact from fiction.
