Invention Harvesting: Practical Tips for Identifying and Capturing Innovation *
Invention harvesting—sometimes also referred to as invention mining, invention capture, brainstorming, and ideation, among other terms—should be a proactive process driven by in-house counsel and/or IP managers who work with internal constituencies to encourage innovators. The goal is often to identify new inventions that will help the company move into productive and hopefully lucrative landscapes, often with disruptive technologies. And as game-changing innovation is encouraged and pursued incremental innovations that provide competitive advantage are often uncovered.
Invention harvesting can be approached in various ways, but success requires a comprehensive understanding of ongoing research and development within the company, ongoing research and development by competitors, technical realities and deployment timelines, the wants and needs of customers, and an understanding about what will be achieved by seeking patent protection.
This panel will discuss how invention harvesting can successfully be rolled out across an entire company, how strategic opportunity can be identified through monitoring the competitive landscape, tools and best practices that allow in-house counsel and IP managers to streamline invention capture, and the importance of taking an introspective look that focuses on future goals, core competence and the existing research and development pipeline.
