Inside the Beltway: The Future of IP and Innovation Policy *
With President Donald J. Trump in the White House a lot of things are expected to be different in Washington, DC. But will IP and innovation policy be among those things that take a turn? Some believe that at least the way the Executive Branch treats IP and innovation will change significantly because Howard Lutnick, who is Trump’s pick to be the new Commerce Secretary, is a prolific patented inventor who has made many millions with a truly diverse portfolio of invention.
Meanwhile, Senator Chris Coons (D-DE) and Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC), continue to try and get patent eligibility reform (PERA) and PTAB reform (PREVAIL) across the finish line, and the much anticipated new entrant to the patent reform line-up is the RESTORE Act, which received a hearing in December 2024 during a lame duck session.
This panel will discuss what is going on behind the scenes, and what we can likely expect to percolate to the forefront.
