Industry 5.0 and the Evolving Role of Intellectual Property

Industry and innovation are changing. Today business is fast transitioning from merely using digital technologies to enhance manufacturing and industrial processes to enhancing production by integrating human capabilities with cutting-edge technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics. This transition from Industry 4.0 to Industry 5.0 is redefining innovation, intellectual property and business.

How can and should companies be positioning themselves to use, develop and innovate in the technological areas that will define Industry 5.0? How can and should companies innovate and build portfolios worldwide in order to compete against global competition? How can and should intellectual property rights and assets be created, maintained and exploited in the age increasingly defined by better, smarter AI technologies? What legal issues are lurking just beyond the horizon, and how can and should companies prepare to address the fast-moving technological landscape, so they are not left behind, and so they are not unwisely spending—or over spending—to obtain and keep assets that are simply unessential?

These and many other questions dominate the day-to-day substantive decision making for executive IP professionals, but there are many other issues that arise as well. This roundtable discussion will focus on the day-to-day issues facing top IP counsel in a variety of different industries, with particular focus on those matters that really keep IP executives awake at night worrying about.
