Innovation, IP and Women: Solutions for Closing the Gender Gap *
The number of women inventors has quintupled since the 1970s, yet fewer than 20% of issued U.S. patents have at least one woman inventor and fewer than 8% list a woman as the primary inventor. This patent gender gap is not the only such gap. In 2023, all-women owned business in the United States raised $3.2 billion from VCs, while all-men owned businesses raise $114 billion. And while more law firm associates are now women, only approximately 10% of all patent litigators in the United States are women.
The question: What can and should be done to close the gap in the IP and innovation fields? Are there any short-term solutions that can be pursued? What should be done long-term to alter these trends?
