Turning Innovation into Assets: Building a Scalable IP Pipeline *
R&D investment does not create value on its own. Value is realized only when organizations consistently identify, evaluate, and convert technical work into intellectual property aligned with business objectives. Most companies fall short not because they lack innovation, but because they lack a disciplined system for capturing and filtering it.
This session is about building a system that consistently converts innovation into competitive advantage. The panel will focus on the front end of the portfolio lifecycle: building a repeatable, scalable invention pipeline that produces high-quality inputs. Panelists will examine how leading organizations operationalize invention harvesting as a core business process—establishing consistent cadence, aligning incentives, and implementing structured intake and review mechanisms that convert ongoing engineering and product development into viable IP opportunities.
The discussion will also address how potential IP assets are initially classified—such as core, defensive, monetizable, or non-core—to ensure that resources are directed toward opportunities that align with commercial priorities. Panelists will explore how organizations approach the patent-versus-trade-secret decision as a practical, business-driven judgment made early in the process, not an afterthought.
Finally, the panel will address execution challenges that routinely undermine pipeline effectiveness, including engineer disengagement, disclosure fatigue, and misalignment between legal, technical, and business teams—and how better process design and governance can overcome them.

R&D investment does not create value on its own. Value is realized only when organizations systematically identify, evaluate, and convert technical work into durable intellectual property aligned with business strategy. Panelists will begin by examining how leading organizations operationalize invention harvesting as a core business process. We will then take the next step and tackle the critical downstream decision about how to choose the right protection strategy to convert the identified potential IP assets into actual IP assets that have a value.
