Capturing Innovation: Best Practices for Invention Harvesting *

CLEInvention harvesting—sometimes also referred to as invention mining, brainstorming, and ideation, among other terms—is a proactive process that involves (1) prompting innovators to conceive of new inventions or reveal inventions already conceived but not yet appreciated or articulated; and (2) documenting such inventions so they can be protected, either with a patent or through documentation as a trade secret.

Invention harvesting is a powerful tool to drive innovation.  Many companies understand the numerous potential benefits of invention harvesting, and either want to start an invention harvesting program, or they want to expand the use of such a program that is already in place. But without taking concrete steps to support and nurture invention-harvesting programs, their aspirations may bear limited fruit.

This panel will discuss approaches to invention harvesting, impediments and roadblocks to invention harvesting, and best practices.
