CLEImmersive technologies are fundamentally changing the way we live, work and consume information and media. And Extended Reality (XR) is blurring the boundaries between the physical world and the digital space. Through the combination of Augmented Reality (AR), which superimposes a computer-generated image on a user’s view of the real world), Virtual Reality (VR), which generates a simulation of three-dimensional images or an environment that can be interacted with in a seemingly real or physical way, and Mixed Reality (MR), which blends physical and digital worlds, consumers are able to step into 360-degree immersive digital experiences.

The combination of Artificial Intelligence (AI), 5G telecommunications technologies and the Internet of Things (IoT), XR is opening up new business models and opportunities for service providers in a wide range of areas:

— Gaming: Immersive multiplayer gaming
— Education: AR/VR exploration and edutainment
— Media: Holographic communications
— Sports: Enhanced fan-experience
— Retail: Billboard AR shopping
— Automotive: AR windshields
— Manufacturing: Digital twins for training, collaboration and enhanced maintenance
— Society: Augmented city exploration

This panel will explore how best to protect immersive technologies, such as AI, VR and 3d modeling, and the challenges facing patent owners and innovators when they seek to license and ultimately enforce those patents.
