Translating IP for the C-Suite: Counseling Leadership on Innovation, Risk, and Enterprise Value
The challenges confronting in-house IP teams do not end with managing portfolios, litigation, budgets, outside counsel, and competing business priorities. IP leaders must also translate those day-to-day realities into a compelling business case for senior executives and the board—often for decision-makers who understand growth, risk, and enterprise value, but may not fully appreciate how intellectual property affects each of them.
Building on the preceding discussion of the pressures and constraints facing the in-house IP function, this panel will examine how corporate IP counsel communicate up the chain, establish credibility with leadership, and secure the resources, authority, and strategic latitude necessary to protect the company’s innovations and advance its business objectives. Panelists will discuss how they convert legal complexity, portfolio needs, enforcement risk, competitive threats, and long-term investment requirements into clear business consequences and actionable recommendations.
The conversation will explore what the C-suite and board need to hear, which metrics and narratives resonate, how to frame IP spending as an investment rather than a cost, and how to obtain support before a crisis forces the issue. Panelists will also address how effective IP leaders move beyond reporting activity to shaping decisions—connecting intellectual property strategy with innovation, market position, risk management, and long-term enterprise value.
