Democratizing AI: Open Source and the Path to Trust and Accountability

View Session Speakers

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has taken center stage in popular culture thanks to the significant advances of tools like ChatGPT. Even those with only passing technological prowess are now familiar with the power of AI, and everyone has an opinion as to what AI can and cannot do, and should and should not do. AI and associated technologies present numerous threats and challenges, not the least of which is ensuring that AI technologies are accountable, robust, reliable and trustworthy.

Of course, AI presents great opportunity as well. Facebook has released Llama 3 LLM for free and open source. Llama, an equivalent to GPT4, can now be used by smaller developers who will not need to invest millions (or billions) of development dollars. This move democratizes AI, changing the entire playing field for start-ups and SMEs. Thus, AI developers can create a compelling value proposition by leveraging the strengths of proprietary and open-source models, driving innovation, and setting new standards in the AI market. This open source approach to AI provides accessible, high-quality AI solutions and ensures continuous support and updates, which enhance customer satisfaction, retention and revolving revenue. This panel will discuss the open source versus proprietary AI business models, whether open source will, in fact, democratize AI development and lead to greater trust and accountability.
