Foley Hoag Partner Barbara Fiacco Named President of AIPLA

Boston, October 25, 2019 – Foley Hoag LLP partner Barbara Fiacco has been named President of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA), a national bar association of approximately 12,000 members. Fiacco was installed in her position at AIPLA’s 2019 Annual Meeting, held October 24-26 in Washington, D.C.

As AIPLA President, Fiacco will be responsible for representing U.S. intellectual property interests throughout the world and guiding AIPLA’s domestic intellectual property policy.

Fiacco’s active leadership roles within AIPLA span well over a decade. In addition to her service on AIPLA’s Executive Committee, she has served as a member of its Board of Directors, Chair of Legislation Committee, Chair of Patent Law Committee and Chair of Membership Committee. She currently serves as Chair of AIPLA’s Subject Matter Eligibility Task Force. In October 2015, she was the recipient of AIPLA’s President’s Outstanding Service Award, acknowledging her years of dedication and service.

As a Co-Chair of Foley Hoag’s Patent, Trade Secrets and Related Rights Litigation practice, Fiacco represents clients in complex intellectual property and patent litigation matters. Her technology-related practice focuses on the biomedical field, including cases involving recombinant DNA, monoclonal antibodies, fusion proteins, siRNAs, small molecule compounds, drug delivery systems, molecular diagnostics, and medical devices.

Fiacco has defended pharmaceutical and life sciences clients in significant patent infringement lawsuits that have resulted in summary judgment or other favorable outcomes for her clients. Recently, she co-led a team of Foley Hoag attorneys that represented the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in its significant trial victory against a Nobel Prize winner correcting the inventorship of groundbreaking cancer immunotherapy patents.

Fiacco has been the recipient of numerous accolades in recognition of her excellence within the intellectual property sector. For 2020, she was named Boston Biotechnology and Life Sciences Practice Lawyer of the Year by Best Lawyers in America. Fiacco currently appears on Managing Intellectual Property‘s Top 250 Women in IP list and IP Stars list, for which she is recognized as a Patent Star for Massachusetts.

Formed in 1897, AIPLA is a national bar association that strives to maintain a high standard of professional ethics; aid in the improvement in laws relating to intellectual property and in their proper interpretation by the courts, and provide legal education to the public and to its members on intellectual property issues. AIPLA represents a wide and diverse spectrum of individuals from law firms, companies, and institutions involved directly or indirectly in the practice of patent, trademark, copyright and unfair competition law, as well as other fields of law affecting intellectual property.
