Rinat Shangeeta is Senior Patent and Open Source Counsel for Twilio, Inc., a cloud communications and customer engagement platform. Rinat helps drive Twilio’s patent and open source strategy. A member of the open source software committee, she manages legal aspects of the open source process as well as contributes to the overall open source strategies for the company. After joining Twilio, she developed Twilio’s revamped open source policy for use, contribution to, and release of open source projects. She currently manages the open source approval process and counsels on open source licensing and compliance.
Rinat also co-leads Twilio’s Patent Committee in developing and executing on Twilio’s patent strategy. She is responsible for patent portfolio development and management, including engaging with engineering and product teams to mine and protect inventions and helping lead the prosecution and management of US and foreign patent applications. Rinat’s responsibilities further include IP due diligence and integration for M&A activities, licensing and contract negotiations, reviewing of IP provisions in M&A and commercial agreements, evaluation of participation in standards bodies and patent strategy organizations, etc. Rinat received her B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Rutgers University and she worked in the technology industry in various roles for eight years prior to starting law school. Rinat graduated from Rutgers Law School with a J.D. in 2015 and practiced patent prosecution in private practice prior to moving in-house.
