Christine Xiao, an associate at Womble Bond Dickinson, focuses her practice on intellectual property transactions, data privacy, and cybersecurity. She regularly reviews, drafts, and prepares online privacy policies, terms of use, and other externally-facing documents related to data collection and use for clients in a variety of sectors, such as retail, technology, and life sciences.  Christine also works on ongoing privacy compliance projects related to U.S. state and federal privacy laws as well as European privacy laws.  She is a contributor to the Team’s client alerts, including the series Countdown to State Law Privacy Compliance.  She is recognized by the IAPP as a certified information privacy professional for the U.S. (CIPP/US).

Prior to joining the firm, Christine worked as a research technician for Duke University Medical Center in the Department of Pharmacology and Cancer Biology.

How ‘Public’ is the Public Domain? Winnie-the-Pooh Illustrates Copyright Limitations of Public Domain Works

You may have heard that on January 1, 2022, Winnie-the-Pooh and the other characters from the Hundred Acre Wood are now in the public domain. But did you know that not all of Christopher Robin’s friends are treated the same in the eyes of copyright law? The characters have multiple authors, including A.A. Milne who first published Winnie-the-Pooh in 1926, and The Walt Disney Company, which brought the stories to the screen. Milne’s characters from his 1926 books entered the public domain at the beginning of this year, but Disney’s iteration remains copyright protected for now.
